This design for a long time friend's family burial plot in the famous Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville, Kentucky, talks to the two cultures shared by the family: those of China and the United States. A single slab, cleft on the north and south faces, honed smooth on the remaining three, carries the family surname in Mandarin and in English. These translations of the family's essence are inscribed deep into the variegated cleft surface. 1" square grooves traverse all five surfaces of the eight ton Vermont granite slab.
