Designed 2018, unrealized
On a beautiful street leading to the Hollywood sign, we nestled a dynamic ADU into the client's hillside backyard.
For a repeat client, the brief was a space for visiting relatives and a space for the wife to write (children's books among others to be precise!) On a generous lot, albeit strangely shaped, we located the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) so as to take advantage of the hillside. The building's two levels includes significant outdoor deck spaces on three levels, providing private space for guests, and a true 'room of her own' for the author. An expressive stair wends its way up all three levels, responding to the odd angles of the site.
Finished in white cement plaster, the form is meant to appear as a sturdy and singular addition to the hill, connected yet standing on it's own. A dramatic splash of orange, emphasizes the drama of ascending and descending. As a part of the project, the flat section of the backyard was given over to a lap pool and an outdoor dining room (the couple are excellent cooks and avid entertainers). Unfortunately for this project, the effort was shelved when the owner's purchased an adjoining property, and expanded in a more horizontal (and thus more economical) fashion. Another project the studio worked on with this client!
This project shows how to make an ADU work in the hills of Hollywood!
